Ancient Egypt Test!
Today in class we took our test on Ancient Egypt. I thought the test was pretty easy, except two questions that I thought through and hope I got right. I think I did a good job on the test and I am anxious to find out the results from the test. I was a little worried at first since we didn't get so much time to learn the material, but Ancient Egypt really fascinates me, so I really enjoyed learning about it and it didn't bother me to study for the test. I'm glad the tests over even though it was really easy, Mr. Schick left to go put the tests through the Scantron and I'm anxious to find out how I did.

Pyramid Building Challenge w/Zaire!
Today in class Mr. Schick paired me up with Zaire to do the Pyramid Building Challenge. Let me tell you something, that game was torture! It was the worst thing ever! You had to get everything right and sometimes just random things would just happen! I mean during my pyramid building my workforce got swarmed with locusts! Then it was the plague, I had to redo it about over 5 times which was really annoying. This game makes you temporarily lose your sanity. Luckily, I finally finished and me and Zaire got a B! I was so glad to finally finish the game! They were taking notes while me and Zaire were playing the game. We have a test on Friday, I'll make sure to study hard!

Cyber Day 2.0!
1. One of the most important discoveries the Egyptians came up with was how they developed a system based off of the constellations. This invention is important because from this they made sundials, two calendars, and they built some of the pyramids in align with certain stars. During the day with their sundials they would divide the day into 24 hours and the night sky into 36 star groups. They had two calendars a regular one and then a 360 day ceremonial schedule. The temples would be in align with stars and in a southern direction and faced towards the star Sirius. This was very important because Egyptians started to advance in society and understand the universe we live in. It improved life for the Egyptians a lot because they started to advance as a society and move forward in life and discover new things that helped us to get where we are today in society.
2. Another technological discovery the Egyptians came up with was a mathematical system. The Egyptians are responsible for the shapes of mathematics we have today and most of the stuff the Egyptians did got got passed down to the Greeks. They had a good understanding of math and used it in building the pyramids, surveying, making a calendar, administration, accounting, and to solve world problems more than discovering new things. This was important because they used this to become more advance. Since they could now figure out area and volume of certain areas they could advance even further. The Egyptians started something huge that would lead onto even bigger discoveries. This discovery with math really helped to improve the Egyptians by helping out the Pharaoh, now since they could find out area and etc. the Pharaoh could give everybody a piece of land (which he did) and then he could decide how much he would tax them on it.
3. An important invention the Egyptians came up was being able to control/irrigate the Nile River. This river would flood every July and the river would destroy their homes and crops and they needed a way to stop it. The Egyptians came up with the idea to divert the Nile River, by doing that the river was able to go to different regions and and the river would no longer flood their homes. This is important because now the Egyptians could in a way control the Nile River and prevent it from flooding their homes. This helped the Egyptians by they could now take more from using the Nile River and they no longer had to worry about their homes or crops getting destroyed by the flood.
4. Another good invention the Egyptians came up with was medicine. Egyptians would write on papyrus what they would discover about the human body such as the heart, pulse, and etc. Part of the Egyptians discovery was that when they felt the heart and if they felt that it was beating slowly or something then they would decide that the patient had a problem. An interesting thing about the Egyptians with practicing medicine was that they believed the supernatural was the cause of people getting sick. The Egyptians coming up with some of the first doctors and getting started with medicine is important because this was again another advance in society, now we can start to learn about our bodies and cure people from diseases. This helped to improve the Egyptians by they started to become doctors and treat people from their diseases and diagnose people. This also helped us to get where we are today with medicine.
5. Soon Egypt decided that it was time to start educating young Egyptian boys. They did this because Egypt needed more educated men to help run society. You'll notice how they did not decide to educate the women which shows that women are seen lower than the men at that time. After they started to educate the boys Egypt started to see more men in higher positions on the hierarchy. In the New Kingdom era, you could not move up on the hierarchy but by them teaching and the new Egyptian era things were changing in the community. This is important because the Egyptian community was starting to change and develop even further and they were advancing even more. This helped the Egyptians by that the men could have better lives and the Egyptians started to become educated, high class people who were running a fast advancing society.

-Egyptian life is centered around the Nile River
-The Nile River flows from the South to North
-Every July the Nile River floods
-Every October the Nile River leaves behind rich soil
-A big technological breakthrough was being able to irrigate the Nile River
-The Great Sphinx of Giza- built around 2555-2532 B.C.

Cyber Day #1
Today we did not have school due to the many inches of snow we received last night. Unfortunately, today is a cyber day. Our cyber day assignment from Mr. Schick was to take the notes on the Ancient Egypt prezi. The notes I took are:
Geography: Egyptian life is centered around the Nile River, water for drinking, for irrigating, for bathing, and for transportation, every July it floods, every October it leaves behind rich soil, the delta is a broad, marshy triangular are of fertile silt, managing the river required technological breakthroughs in irrigation
Pyramids: The Great Sphinx of Giza, built around 2555-2532 B.C., a recumbent lion with a human's head, oldest monumental statue in the world
Daily Life: 1. Pharoah 2. Government Officials- Nobles, Priests 3. Soldiers 4. Scribes 5. Merchants 6. Artisans 7. Farmers 8. Slaves and Servants, Slaves and Servants helped the wealthy with household and child raising duties, raised wheat, barley, lentils, onions- benefitted from irrigation of the Nile, Artisans would crave statues and reliefs, showing military battles and scenes in the afterlife, money/barter system was used- merchants might accept bags of grain for payment- later coinage came about, Scribes kept records, told stories, wrote poetry described anatomy and medical treatments, they wrote in hieroglyphs and in hieratic, Soldiers used wooden weapons (bows, arrows, spears) w/bronze and might ride chariots, Upper Class known as "white kilt class" priests, physicians, engineers, religious and political leader
Pharaohs: The political and religious leader of the Egyptian people, holding the titles: "Lord of Two Lands", As "Lord of Two Lands" the pharaoh was the leader of Upper Egypt. He owned all land, made laws, collected taxes, and defended Egypt against foreigners, Hatshepsut was a women who served as pharaoh, Cleopatra VII also served as pharaoh, but much later (51-30 B.C)
Goddesses and Gods: Over 2000 gods and goddesses, they "controlled" the lives of humans

"Guns, Germs, and Steel" Test!
Today in class we took a test on the movie we watched last week called, "Guns, Germs, and Steel". I think I did really good on the test. I reviewed my notes a lot and I remembered everything that was in my notes which is good. I thought the test overall was fairly easy. I had two questions on the front that confused me a little because I did not understand the question so I did my best to answer them and I hope I got them right. I am anxious to get the test results and see how I did. I'm hoping I did really well on the test!

Test Results and Test on Tuesday
Today in class we started to present our projects on "Guns, Germs, and Steel". My group did not get to go today, only two groups got a chance to go today. We finally got our test results back on our first test of the semester. Mr. Schick has this system where if you get an A he will ring the bell once and if you get a 100 you will get two dings. I got an 98 so I got one ding. I'm really happy that I did that well on the test. I studied really hard so I'm really happy with my grade! Before class was over Mr. Schick informed us that we were going to have a test on Tuesday on the movie we watched in class "Guns, Germs, and Steel". I'll make sure I study a lot for this test so I can do well on this test too.

"Gun, Germs, and Steel!" Project
Today in class Mr. Schick told us that we were going to do a project in class today. We had to get into groups and then pick a number out of a hat. For this project I'm working with Jayla, Trish, and Rosemary. We got #2 so that meant we got to pick our topic second. We chose food, I did corn Trish did wheat Rosemary did rice and Jayla did sorghum. The notes I took on corn are:
-Native to southern Mexico
-Formed one of the earliest agricultural communities throughout the Americas
-Origins in central America
-The crop spreads up the western coast to northern America
-Domestication has fundamentally changed the genetic structure and behavior of the plant
-The corn used to only grow no larger than the human thumb, now they can reach over eight feet high
-Corn was seized by European colonists of the New World

Technical Difficulties & "Guns, Germs, and Steel!" (continued)
Today in the beginning of class Mr. Schick pulled up the "Guns, Germs, and Steel!" video on his laptop for us to finish. Unfortunately Mr. Schick's laptop had other plans for class by not letting us hear the video. We had to use Evan's laptop to watch the video and then finally we could watch the video with sound. Today we finally finished "Guns, Germs, and Steel!" Some notes I took on the movie today are:
-Making plaster from limestone was a big step
-Heating up the limestones for a long time at high temperatures allows the limestone to become plaster
-Plaster was used for sealing off homes to keep the house warm, cool, keep rain out, etc
-Because people in New Guinea spent so much time feeding themselves and getting food so that prevented them from getting so advanced like we are today
- Fertile Crescent is no longer farmable since it was over farmed and the land was worn out
-The Fertile Crescent has a fundamental weakness the area is dry and it does not rain there much
-Americans consume 20 million ton of meat a year
-The answer to the question: "Why do you explorers carry more cargo than us?" is Geography is the answer. It is the reason why people in New Guinea do not have as much cargo

Gun, Germs, and Steel! (continued)
Today we had West Civ. first and Veronica brought the class muchkins which was great because I didn't eat breakfast this morning. After having a little treat we started to continue the video we watched on Friday called, "Gun , Germ, and Steel!". Mr. Schick had us take notes on the video:
-In the village Draa they uncovered remains of the first and earliest permanent settlements
-The settlers made the first granary where food was stored
-They discovered plant cultivation domestication unconsciously
-Middle East grew wheat and barley
-China was next in growing rice
-North and South America was then growing corn, squash, and beans
-Africa was growing sorghum, millins, and yams
-Goats and sheeps were the first animals to be domesticated
-Geographic Luck- You either win the lottery or lose with were your location is
-Carnivores are not good animals to domesticate
-14 species have been successfully breed and domesticated
-Goats, sheep, pigs, cows, horses, donkeys, bactrian camels, arabian camels, water buffalo, llamas, reindeer, yaks, mithan, ball cattle
-South America is the ancestor for llamas
