Roman Lecture 2.0

Today in class Mr. Schick continued his lecture on Rome. First we reviewed the differences in Rome's and the USA's government, and then we took notes on the ppt. 

Roman Legion:
5,000 soldiers, not payed, were loyal to Rome, served because it was what they had to do

A very important topic we discussed today was the Punic Wars.
  
Punic War:

                        -Rome vs Carthage 
                        -Lasted from (264-146 BCE)
                        -Three wars

First Punic War: **264-241 BCE**
  -Naval battles for control of the strategically located island of Sicily
Rome wins!

Second Punic War: **218-201 BCE**
  -29 yr. old Carthaginian general Hannibal almost does the impossible to Rome
  -Attacks Rome from the North after crossing Iberia (Spain) and Alps
  -Laxs sledge to much of the peninsula for 15 yrs. 
  -Never got to Rome... Rome- 2  Carthage- 0

 Third Punic War: **149-146 BCE**
  -Rome wanted to get rid of their threat, Carthage
  -Scipio, Tiberius, Gracchus, and others constantly attacked the city
  -Carthage was burned for 17 days, the city was destroyed
  -When the war was over, 50,000 people in the city were sold to slavery
  -The remaining Carthage territory were annexed, and made into the Roman providence of Africa
